Lost Wawel (Undergrounds)

The Wawel Royal Castle Underground offers visitors the opportunity to explore the results of extensive archaeological excavations conducted beneath Wawel Castle. These excavations have revealed various layers of history, including remnants of medieval buildings, streets, and artifacts.

The Underground provides a unique perspective on the historical development of Wawel Hill, illustrating how the site evolved over different periods. It allows visitors to appreciate the layers of history that contribute to the rich cultural heritage of Krakow.

What to See

The Lost Wawel exhibition combines archaeological reserve with past castle appearance. Have a look at what Wawel Castle looked like in all its glory in the 16-17th century on reconstructions scale models of buildings. See the first rotunda church constructed on the hill in the late 10th century. Observe the evolution of the Wawel Castle and the cathedral. Explore the oldest artefacts found on Wawel hill dated over 2000 years. Watch a huge collection of Renaissance tiles. Walk through the “Lapidarium” full of stone sculptures and architectural details from the castle.

  • It is not allowed to enter the exhibition with luggage. You will have to leave your luggage before the entrance in the nearby luggage storage. It is free of charge.
  • Pets are not allowed to enter. ​

Royal Apartments

Wawel Castle Royal Apartments are located on the first floor of the palace. The exhibition consists king’s and queen’s private chambers, courtiers and guest rooms. During the visit you will admire 16th-century wooden ceilings, stonework windows, portals and fantastic painted friezes.
